Piece of my mind

Fancy me a part of your life
I am making a new book of sayings It’s all about hope for love to come
 la da da da da
Takes about a week to adjust To the rules of the game I am playing
A whole piece of my mind Custom fit around it

Prior history aside
I can handle the next conversation
You could talk about loving anyone
 la da da da da
More than a collection of sighs
The illusion of dawn always breaking
 Everything that we felt
 Makes us into people

Soon I will believe my own eyes
A vision worth all of my questing
Been nowhere I didn’t need to go
 la da da da da
 Whatever I can’t leave behind
Pull the string in my back and I’m talking
 Every piece of my mind
 Makes me into someone
 Ooh
 ooh

Lonely 01:49
Lonely

What if there were only 5 types of people in the world
And you had to decide which one you liked least worst So you could specialize and not end up alone, But that sounded just as stupid to you as it does to me?

If there was only so much oxygen in a room
And if you talked too much you could kill everyone with you
But if you stopped, a tone designed to cause aneurysms
Would kill everyone anyway, and you really liked talking?

If there was only one parachute on the whole plane,
Also only one dog, for argument’s sake a great dane,
And all the human passengers had chosen their own fates,
Would you steal it and save the dog? I would, I would like to think.

Can you be lonely with me, incurably but in excellent company?
Can you know in your heart what it would be cruel of me to say
 Before you figure it out?

Can you be lonely with me, incurably but in excellent company?
Can you know in your heart what it would be cruel of me to say
 Before you figure it out?

Scarborough Fair

Are you going to Scarborough Fair
 Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
 (Of deep forest green)
Parsley sage, rosemary and thyme
Without no seams nor needlework
Then she’ll be a true love of mine

Tell her to find me an acre of land
 Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Between the salt water and the sea strand
Then she’ll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather
 (what does that mean)
 Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
And gather it all in a bunch of heather
Then she’ll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair
 Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

We can talk about it some more
If I find I have breath to spare
In an hour I will be home With my fine little obligations
I’ve got a chip on my shoulder
 Dating back to the Cretaceous
I’ve sung about it before
Just go back a couple pages

 Cut it in half
And whichever one grows back we will know was the real heart of hearts all along
Cut it in half
And whichever one grows back we will know was the real heart of hearts all along
I can get out on my own
You know, minds were made for changing
In an hour I will be gone
In my present incarnation

 It’s a little I told you so
And a little how could you baby
To hell with this crystal ball The reflection’s always hazy

Cut it in half
And whichever one grows back we will know was the real heart of hearts all along
 Cut it in half
And whichever one grows back we will know was the real heart of hearts all along

Long Beach 00:49
Long Beach

You’ve been walking all alone
On a long long beach on a cold cold day
You’ve been trying hard to hold
In your mind two things that cannot both be true

 You’ve been walking all alone
on a long long beach on a cold cold day
You’ve been trying hard to hold
In your mind two things that cannot both be true

BLBRD 03:13
BLBRD

I’ve come a long long way
 From where I was
 There’s just one thing
That makes it hard to trust

You are a far far cry
From what I’ve lost
 But there’s this thing
 That makes me feel alone

Why do you hide from me?
(I wouldn’t want to look behind the door if it wasn’t locked)
Why do you hide from me?
(I wouldn’t want to look behind the door if it wasn’t locked)

Where do you go when you won’t meet my eyes?
Feel something dark stir in a dark corner of my mind
Nothing could be worse than what I’m imagining
(So why don’t you just tell me?) Want to feel like you’ll be there through anything
(Come on baby just tell me)

Why do you hide from me? (
I wouldn’t want to look behind the door if it wasn’t locked)
Why do you hide from me?
(I wouldn’t want to look behind the door if it wasn’t locked)

I’ve come a long long way
From where I was
I really want to be able to trust

Want to feel like you’ll be there through anything
(Come on baby just tell me)

Why do you hide from me? (
I wouldn’t want to look behind the door if it wasn’t locked)
Why do you hide from me?
(I wouldn’t want to look behind the door if it wasn’t locked)

So Often 02:27
So Often

I know it’s not for me to tell you
I know it’s not for me to tell you why
 Love so often
Takes the shape of its vessel
Takes the shape of its vessel
Takes the shape of its vessel

Tracer 01:40
Tracer Tracer met me at the park
 Envelope exchange in the dark
Not much maybe but it is a start
Give me two weeks, you’ll know my signal

Tracer, Tracer, Tracer, won’t you find mine
Tracer, Tracer, Tracer, won’t you find mine

Tracer met me at the bar
Wherever he’s gone, it can’t be far
Someone told me they’d seen his car
I hate when it ends up like this

Tracer, Tracer, Tracer, won’t you find mine
Tracer, Tracer, Tracer, won’t you find mine

Isidore 01:17
Isidore I don’t even care anymore
It’s gonna be what it’s gonna be
Here is my life, a thousand hands touching me
My appetite ain’t what it used to be

I feel above the door for a key
Now that I’m in there’s no stopping me
What is a door? What, Isidore?
 These are my eyes
 Here is what they see

Finer Thing 02:16
Finer Thing I want a man with a steady hand and an eye for the finer things
He’s gotta know which way he’s walking if he thinks he’s gonna walk with me
I see no problem with my strong first impression and if you don’t agree
Make room, make room for the real thing Seems like when your heart breaks open people come and go as they please Used to tie me up in knots but I can’t live on my knees
I see no reason to be bending and scraping and if you don’t agree
Move over, move over for the real thing

Na na na na na na na na na
I want a man with a steady hand and an eye for the finer things
He’s gotta know which way he’s walking if he thinks he’s gonna walk with me
I see no problem with my strong first impression and if you don’t agree
Make room, make room for the real thing

about

This collection of songs, recorded mostly before and a little bit during the pandemic, has been fermenting in a folder on my desktop for years. But that treatment doesn't do justice to what the songs mean to me, and it feels like it's past time to share them.

I keep getting hung up trying to write big long spiels and I think that's where I'm going wrong, where the momentum to push them out into the world gets lost. I don't think they need a big long spiel. If you've ever tried to open your heart again and found the hinges a little rusty, there may be something in here for you. That's all.
